Aug. 3, 2010 at 7:14am

I purchased your book Don't Eat Your Heart Out when my husband had his first heart attack at 37 years old. (he is now 53 and doing very well) It was used over and over and loaned out many times. It has disappeared and I've since purchased another edition. The recipe I am looking for that is not in this edition is your brushetta. We absolutely loved it! Now our oldest daughter is getting married and I am putting together a book of favorite recipes and would love to include this one. Can you either send it to me or direct me where to find it? Thanks!

Dec. 15, 2009 at 1:47pm

In your book, "Road to a Healthy Heart," your bean recipes call for upward of 5-15oz cans of beans @ 350mg of sodium per can. Let's take, "Three-Bean Soup" as an example. 5-15oz cans of beans would equal almost 1,750mg of sodium per serving yet on your Nutritional Analysis next to the recipe you say there is only 192mg of sodium per serving. That's a large margin. Which amount is more accurate? Thank you for your attention!

Question (Oct 5, 2009 at 5:40pm)

Oct. 5, 2009 at 5:40pm

My husband recently had a major heart attack and triple bypass on Valentine's Day 09 in Puyallup. He's only 46. No family history. Drs say his lifestyle & eating habits were the main cause: he smoked, no exercise, eating primary anything covered in gravy, mostly red meat & fast food. Since getting out of the hospital, he's done a 180 & successfully graduated from cardiac rehab: quit smoking, started exercising and eating low fat, low sodium. He even did the Heart Walk in Tacoma last weekend! He is naturally very lean & high metabolism: 6'2" and weighs in 160 lbs. In the past, he always "ate what he wanted" because he didn't have to worry about weight. Now that he's eating low fat and keeping his fat intake under the recommended 30%, he still has a hard time keeping weight on. What is the most healthy way for him to keep the weight on but not go overboard on his fat intake? If he adds more protein, how much should he have? We've been following your recipes in your cookbook, and watched your videos in rehab. Your story really hit home with him because of the similarities and age you were at when you had your surgery. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I attended your presentation at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno, CA. I learned much from the 1 hour lecture. I have a question about the chart titled "Construct Your Personal Fat Budget" that you distributed. I am about 230 lbs. My ideal weight is about 180. If I strictly limit my fat intake to the final figure of fat grams per day, would I be able to expect to eventually reduce my weight to the ideal weight? Is that without taking into consideration calories or carbs? Or do calories and carbs even need to be considered?

Question (Jun 21, 2009 at 7:36pm)

Jun. 21, 2009 at 7:36pm

Hi Joe; I want to thank you for bringing awareness to a very urgent subject. I come from a family of rampant heart disease—my brother has had three bypasses, both parents died of heart disease and my sister had a massive heart attack at age 50. I am 54 yrs. old and have CAD, and angina and genically high cholesterol. The side effects from the statins completely debilitated my muscles and joints to the point where I could no longer work out or even get up from the floor trying to play with my grandchildren. I went to my cardiologist and said I’m going off the statins and I’m going to lower my cholesterol through diet and exercise. It has been a year, lost 40 lbs. and have lowered my cholesterol by following a heart healthy diet which I learned everything through your book, Road to a Healthy Heart. My cholesterol is 154 and my ratio is 2.0. For a year I have only eaten whole grains—no more white anything or refined sugars, (still enjoy my glass of wine), nuts, beans, fruit, veggies, fish. I have made and served so many of your recipes and everyone has enjoyed them. I just wanted to thank you so much for helping me to get back my quality of life so that I now can enjoy and play with my grandchildren. I consider you a gift that came to me at the right time. God Bless, Judy Finocchario from Rochester, N.Y.

I am an RN and work in cardiac rehab. We use your video for teaching and we have found it to be very informative and helpful. One question I have is when you recommend a "budget" of fats for the day, does that mean mostly mono and polyunsaturated fats and a minimum of saturated and trans fats? Thank you for your help. I appreciate your website as well.

Question (Jan 13, 2009 at 4:46pm)

Jan. 13, 2009 at 4:46pm

Joe - I had a quadruple bypass in 2007 at age 37. I have always been a jock (played college football) and have never smoked. How often does bypass or heart attack happen to people in their 30's? My surgeon told me that in 1300 open heart surgeries he had cut people under the age of 40 less than 20 or 30 times and most of those were valve jobs. I've been told repeatedly how lucky I am, but, as you may have experienced when it happened to you, I frequently feel more like I was unfairly chosen. My first few months after surgery, I was bitter, although I've dealt with a lot of it.  I look forward to reading your book, "Take A Load Off Your Heart," particularly the part about stress. I think it is probably as big a factor as diet. Thanks for your web site and your books. I'm glad to see that you are out there talking about your story. There is a need for it. Thanks!

Question (Sep 15, 2008 at 9:05pm)

Sep. 15, 2008 at 9:05pm

My husband had bypass surgery last month. We instantly got religious about low fat which wasn't a problem because I had already been watching fat; just not religously. Our cardiac rehab emphasizes low salt. We have been keeping to the recommended 2000mg as closely as we can. So my question is this. We are fairly young to be in the zipper club, (48/50) and I don't have any health issues. Since we started closely monitoring salt intake, my feet cramp at night. His legs have been cramping with the walking, but it's not getting any better. We are not atheletes but are active. Is it possible we are not getting enough salt?

Question (Aug 23, 2008 at 2:02pm)

Aug. 23, 2008 at 2:02pm

I'd like to welcome my newest grandchild, Joseph Charles Piscatella, named after me. He was born in Pacific Palisades, CA, on August 18.rnrnWhen I went through bypass surgery in 1977 at age 32, the prognosis was not good. One doctor predicted that I would not live to age 40 and would miss seeing my children, then ages 6 and 4, graduate from high school. This may have been the best thing that ever happened to me. From that moment on I focused less on what I had to do - exercise regularly, eat healthy, manage my stress and stay away from cigarette smoke - and more on why I wanted to do it. Soon my heart-healthy way of living became second nature.rnrnToday I am 31 years post bypass surgery and have seen my children grow up, graduate, get married and start their own families. In 1977 I never thought I'd hold a grandchild, but today I hold four of them - including the newest, Joe. Heart-healthy living is not always easy to stick with, but when I look at my grandchildren, I know it has been worth the effort.rnrnJoe Piscatella

Hey Mr.Joe, I'm a student doing a project on the international overweight crisis and you are the role model which my group wants to use to inspire youths that anything is possible. Its amazing how you have overcame all the difficulties and spread your message of a healthy lifestyle worldwide. I was just wondering because information on the blog is limited, but how did you have that coronary bypass in the first place? Did you not exercise as much or had an unhealthy diet? Stay healthy and inspire the world! (I know you will)

Question (Jul 15, 2008 at 8:46am)

Jul. 15, 2008 at 8:46am

Good Evening from Black Forest,

I have written you earlier and now I have read your book, Take a load off your heart. Thank you for this book. I do not know any German book like that. I am the woman with three bypasses since 1983, born 1946. One of the bypasses should be bypassed again. What do you know about re-bypass operations? How dangerous are they? One doctor told me I should have an off pump operation (Octopus/Starfish) and they would take the arteria mammaria interna for the bypass. Unfortunately the bypass is in the Circumflex branch and more difficult to handle than the two other bypasses. I have not found any person who had had a rebypass operation. Do you know one? It would be interesting to hear if someone has survived the second operation.

Greetings!
